How to calculate GPA

Worked example: an A in 3 credits and a B in 4

Multiply each class’s grade points by its credit hours, add those up, and divide by your total credit hours: GPA = total grade points ÷ total credits. An A (4.0) in a 3-credit class and a B (3.0) in a 4-credit class give 24 points over 7 credits, a 3.43.

GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits

  • Step 1: turn each letter grade into grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0 …)
  • Step 2: multiply each by the class’s credit hours
  • Step 3: add the results to get total grade points
  • Step 4: divide by total credit hours
  • Pass/fail, withdrawals and incompletes are left out

Without credit hours

If every class counts the same — common in middle school and some high schools — skip the multiplication and simply average the grade points: an A, a B and a C average (4 + 3 + 2) ÷ 3 = 3.0.

Weighted GPA

For a weighted GPA, add the class-level bonus to each grade first (commonly +0.5 Honors, +1.0 AP/IB), then calculate the same way. The weighted GPA calculator shows both figures side by side.

Cumulative GPA

To combine terms, add up the grade points and credits of every term and divide once. Averaging term GPAs gives the wrong answer when terms have different credit loads.

What does not count

Grades with no grade points — pass/fail, withdrawals, incompletes, audits — are left out of both totals at most schools. Transfer credit usually counts toward your degree but not your GPA.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my overall GPA?

Add the grade points from every graded class you have taken and divide by all the credits those classes carry. That is your cumulative GPA.

How do I calculate my GPA without credits?

Average the grade points: add them up and divide by the number of classes. It gives the same answer as credits when every class has equal credits.

How do I calculate my total GPA from two semesters?

Add the two semesters’ grade points together and divide by their combined credits. Do not average the two GPAs unless the semesters had identical credits.

Do I round or truncate my GPA?

Schools differ. Most show two decimals; some registrars truncate (3.456 becomes 3.45) rather than round (3.46).
